Shifting from sanitary pads to menstrual cups has been a life-changing experience for me.Periods have become much easier than before.I,too was apprehensive at first.I had read so many articles and experiences, watched endless videos and did my own research in every way possible to know more about this thing called the menstrual cup.

This article is about my experience, how I overcame my fears, how much easier ‘the one week’ has become, and an attempt to break the taboo and hush-hush around periods.

I was fed up with using pads as it was uncomfortable and periods used to be a nightmare.I wanted to give cups a try but did not find the courage to do so,as I had been using pads for so many years. To those unfamiliar with how a cup works,it has to be folded and inserted into the vagina, unlike pads.

I decided to give it a try and ordered one.I was all set on shifting to cups and had resolved to never use pads again.I could not even fold it properly on the first try,let alone insert it. The cup kept slipping from my hand.I was badly disappointed and felt discouraged.I tried again after some time and was able to insert it but it was not proper as I panicked.I watched some tutorial videos again, tried after some time and it was smooth. The joyful and satisfying feeling I had then cannot be explained through words.

There were a lot of problems in the first cycle, like leakage at night and the cup not unfolding correctly. In the first 2 cycles,I had used pads along with cups to prevent leakage. It requires much practice and patience to master the usage of the cup.Once you get the knack of getting it to unfold, the job is done.

It is rare to get the insertion and removal proper in the first successful try.It may take 3–6 cycles for some people and even more for others. Please do not be dejected if you are not able to use it correctly. The one thing I learnt from experience is not to give up and to try with utmost patience without panicking. The transition from pads to cups has made periods tolerable and less frustrating.

To all the menstruators out there,I wish you would give it a try.If you are a person who wishes to try using cups but are unable to do so due to social constructs ,I completely understand that. But please know that your comfort is what matters during periods and not what society thinks. To those who are intimidated by the cups ,thereby settling for pads as it is easier and does not involve doing something you have never done in your life,a light push out of your comfort zone is all that is needed. All you need is courage, and your fears regarding cups will completely vanish. Not everyone can get used to cups, as medical issues might be a hindrance in some cases, and some cannot get used to them. But giving it a try is not harmful.

The amount of toxicity created by pads for the environment and our bodies is dangerously high, and sustainable sanitary products are the need of the hour. Those who have already shifted to cups,do educate and urge those around you to do the same.I hope this article encourages you to make the change and have a hassle-free period!
